![]() ![]() IFarmer is an agriculture platform that helps smallholder farmers to access quality agri-inputs through partnerships with agri-input companies and retailers and allows the farmers better market access by aggregating products from the farmers and selling them to institutional buyers, retailers, and wholesale markets. By sharing our learnings, we can discover new insights towards migrant-centric and gender-smart improvements in financial inclusion for migrant women and women recipients. Determinants of South-South migration within and from or to African countries, the socio-economic dimensions (networks, income, gender, seasonal movement, etc.), and the impact of the global crises, i.e., the COVID pandemic, on remittance trends associated with South-South migration within Africa are discussed. We explore the experience of migrant women remittance senders and women remittance recipients as African customers, gaining a deeper understanding of who they are as a customer group. About 70 per cent of people migrating from Africa are moving within the African region. This webinar-the first in a multi-part series under the Gender Colab in 2023- focuses on understanding the gendered experience within South-South migration and remittances as experienced within Africa. This Gender Colab connects key stakeholders in the remittance sector to share insights and experiences on remittance policy, research, and innovation, targeting and/or prioritising migrant women and recipients. To drive scalable, sector-wide impact that leads to gender transformative outcomes in financial inclusion and resilience for migrants and their families, particularly migrant women and women recipients, UNCDF has established the Gender Collaborative for Remittances (Gender Colab). In such a context, increasing the number of women agents and developing digital financial services that cater to women’s needs held the promise to improve women’s financial inclusion. ![]() The project aimed to focus on women, youth, and low-income segments of the population.Īs of the start of the project, Orange had 9,000 agents, out of which only 360 were women representing 4 per cent. To help address these barriers, the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in November 2021 partnered with Orange Mobile Finance limited (Orange MFSL) in a consortium with Mosabi, an education platform, and Empire Solutions micro-finance to improve the distribution of digital financial services in Sierra Leone. The limited number of financial products tailored to women, the low level of financial and digital literacy in the country and the few women agents are some of the barriers to women’s financial inclusion in Sierra Leone. The low financial inclusion rate, especially for women, is due to their limited participation in the formal financial system. More specifically, according to the Global Findex report 2021, in Sierra Leone, the financial inclusion rate is 29 percent, and for women, it is even lower at 25 percent. Globally, 74 percent of women are financially included when the financial inclusion rate of the population is 76 percent. ![]()
